For 29 years, our neighborhood children have come to the Yellow Balloon
Fair. It's a day filled with games and great food, Moon Bouncing and riding
those steadfast 'ole ponies. The Yellow Balloon Fair is held by the
Rockville Community Nursery School (RCNS), a cooperative, parent-owned
institution that has had a strong and ongoing presence in Rockville since
1964. The school, housed at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Rockville
(UUCR), is tucked away in a grassy nook of Rockville right off Welsh Ave.
It's a setting that, surrounded by woods and a quiet neighborhood, really
gives that old-time feeling of a fair held on a quaint town common, or in
someone's backyard.
"This is the kind of place that makes you think of your own childhood," said
Janet Pearlman, RCNS board member who has sent both of her sons to the
school. "It's a perfect setting for a local fair that has that small-time
feel with all the big-time events."
While much of the fair is outside on the school grounds, the plant and bake
sale and infamous Yellow Balloon Silent Auction will take place in the cozy
RCNS classrooms where you can just feel that kid imprint. It's a fun day for
all, but most importantly, The Yellow Balloon Fair is RCNS's main
fundraising event. Profits go toward running the school and supporting the
teachers and children who attend this diverse, community-based institution.
Don't miss the Yellow Balloon Fair this year! Events are geared toward kids
of all ages, especially pre-schoolers. Once you wade your way through the
baked goods, the pizza and snocones, and the hundreds of silent auction
items many of which you will just have to have, you can sit under a shady
tree, have a cold drink and eat a piece of fruit. Best of all, you can sit
back and watch as your kids go from game to game and play at the RCNS
neighborhood nursery school.
